Common Water Pump Problems in UAE Homes and How to Fix Them

Not Every Pump Problem Means Replacement

A pump that's acting up isn't automatically a pump that needs replacing. Many of the most common complaints we hear from UAE homeowners — weak pressure, a pump that won't stop cycling, no water at all — trace back to a handful of fixable causes: trapped air, a misadjusted pressure switch, a clogged filter, a tripped overload, or a seasonal drop in a borewell's water table. This guide walks through what's actually fixable, what a homeowner can check safely, and when it's time to call a technician.

Airlock in the System

An airlock happens when air becomes trapped in the pump housing or pipework instead of water, causing the pump to run without actually moving water, or to sputter and lose prime. It's common after maintenance work, a dry-run event, or when a tank has been allowed to run empty.

The fix: most pumps have a priming or bleed valve that can be opened briefly to release trapped air and allow water to fill the casing. If you're not sure where this is on your unit, this is a straightforward job for a technician rather than something to force.

Faulty or Misadjusted Pressure Switch

The pressure switch tells the pump when to turn on and off based on system pressure. A switch that's set incorrectly — or has drifted out of calibration over time — causes two classic symptoms: a pump that cycles on and off far too frequently, or one that runs continuously without ever reaching cut-off pressure.

The fix: pressure switches have adjustable cut-in and cut-out settings, and a technician can recalibrate them to the correct range for your system rather than replacing the switch outright — unless the contacts themselves have failed, in which case a switch replacement is inexpensive compared to a full pump swap.

Clogged Filters and Strainers

Sediment, sand and mineral buildup are a fact of life for water systems across much of the UAE. A clogged inlet strainer or filter restricts flow into the pump, which shows up as reduced pressure at the taps even though the pump itself is running normally.

The fix: most strainers are designed to be opened, cleaned and reinstalled without special tools. Checking and clearing the strainer should be a routine part of seasonal maintenance, particularly for properties on borewell supply where sediment content is higher.

Tripped Thermal Overload

Most pump motors include a thermal overload protector that shuts the motor down if it senses excessive current draw or overheating — a safety feature, not a failure. This commonly trips after a voltage fluctuation, a jammed impeller, or the pump running dry.

The fix: after letting the motor cool, most overloads can be manually reset. If the pump trips again shortly after resetting, that points to a persistent underlying cause — a jammed impeller or a wiring/voltage issue — that needs a technician's inspection rather than repeated resetting.

Low Water Table for Borewell Systems

For properties relying on a borewell, a sudden drop in pumped output isn't always a pump fault. Seasonal changes in groundwater levels can lower the water table below the pump's effective suction range, especially during drier months or in areas with heavy local groundwater extraction.

The fix: this is a site condition, not a pump defect — a technician can confirm the actual water level in the well and advise whether the submersible pump needs to be lowered, or whether output will recover with rainfall or reduced local demand.

DIY-Checkable vs. Call a Technician

• Safe to check yourself: whether the strainer is visibly clogged, whether a breaker or overload has tripped, whether the tank has run dry.
• Call a technician: pressure switch recalibration, persistent overload tripping, suspected airlock in inaccessible pipework, or any borewell water table concerns.
