Why "It Sounds Loud in Here" Is a Design Problem, Not Just a Behavior Problem

Most complaints about noisy offices get treated as a people problem — ask everyone to keep phone calls short, put up a "quiet please" sign, hope for the best. In reality, how loud an open-plan office feels has far more to do with the physics of the room than the discipline of the people in it. Understanding how sound actually behaves indoors — and what a ceiling can and can't do about it — makes it much easier to specify the right fix instead of guessing.

How Sound Travels Indoors

When someone speaks or a keyboard clatters, sound doesn't just travel in a straight line to the nearest listener — it bounces off every hard surface in the room: glass partitions, polished floors, desks, and especially the ceiling, which is usually the one surface that runs uninterrupted across an entire floor plate. Each reflection adds to a buildup of reverberant noise that makes a room feel louder than the sum of the individual sounds in it, and makes speech harder to understand even at a normal volume — a phenomenon acousticians call the "cocktail party problem" at scale.

Two Ratings That Actually Matter: NRC vs. STC

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient)

NRC measures how much sound a material absorbs rather than reflects back into a room, on a scale from 0 (reflects almost everything) to 1 (absorbs almost everything). This is the number that matters most for open-plan ceiling specification, because absorption is what reduces reverberation and background noise buildup within a room. A ceiling tile rated NRC 0.85, for example, absorbs roughly 85% of the sound energy that hits it rather than bouncing it back into the room.

STC (Sound Transmission Class)

STC measures something different: how much a material blocks sound from passing through it into an adjacent space — relevant for a wall between two meeting rooms, or a ceiling below a noisy plant room, but not the main factor in reducing in-room noise on an open floor. A common specification mistake is chasing a high STC ceiling tile when the actual problem is reverberation within the room, which is an NRC problem, not an STC one.

Why Open-Plan Layouts Make This Worse

Open-plan offices are popular in the UAE for collaboration and space efficiency, but removing walls also removes the surfaces that would otherwise absorb and contain sound within smaller rooms. Research on office acoustics consistently links high background noise and poor speech privacy to lower reported concentration, more task-switching, and higher self-reported stress among open-plan workers — not because people are less disciplined, but because the room itself is working against them.

What Actually Reduces the Problem

  • Treat the ceiling first — it's the largest uninterrupted reflective surface in most floor plates, so it delivers the biggest NRC improvement per dirham spent
  • Target NRC 0.7 or higher for general open-plan zones, and higher again around meeting rooms and phone booths
  • Don't rely on ceiling treatment alone in rooms that also need privacy from the next room — that's an STC (wall and door) problem, addressed separately
  • Match the treatment to the zone — high-NRC systems where people concentrate and take calls, standard finishes in corridors and storage areas
